Slovenia is one of Europe's most beautiful destinations, perfectly suited for a campervan road trip. Between turquoise rivers, stunning mountain landscapes, charming coastal towns, and dense forests, countless adventures await. The best part? Short distances make Slovenia ideal for a flexible round trip by motorhome or campervan.

Whether you want to discover the famous Lake Bled, hike through Triglav National Park, or camp along the Adriatic coast, a Slovenian holiday uniquely combines nature, freedom, and adventure.

Why Slovenia is Perfect for a Campervan Road Trip

Slovenia is a true paradise for campers. This small country offers an incredible variety over short distances: mountains, lakes, coast, and historic cities are often just a few hours apart.

Slovenia is especially popular with outdoor enthusiasts, as you can:

  • hike
  • mountain bike
  • kayak
  • wild swim
  • climb
  • camp directly in nature

Plus, there are well-maintained roads, modern campsites, and a relaxed atmosphere.

The Best Destinations for Your Slovenian Holiday

Lake Bled – Slovenia's Postcard Perfect Spot

Lake Bled is one of the country's most famous attractions. The small island with its church, the castle perched high above the water, and the surrounding mountains make this place an absolute highlight.

Tips:

  • Visit early morning or evening (fewer tourists)
  • Head to "Ojstrica" viewpoint for the best panorama
  • Take a boat trip on a traditional "Pletna" boat
  • Don't miss trying the original Bled cream cake

Lake Bohinj – Bled's Quieter Sibling

If you're looking for nature and tranquility, you should definitely visit Lake Bohinj. It's more relaxed here than in Bled, and the surroundings are perfect for hiking, swimming, or stand-up paddleboarding.

Nature is clearly the focus here:

  • Hiking in Triglav National Park
  • Swimming in the clear mountain lake
  • SUP or kayaking
  • Starting point for alpine tours

Ideal for anyone seeking more peace and less hustle and bustle.

Soča Valley – Slovenia's Adventure Paradise

The Soča Valley captivates with its turquoise river and spectacular mountain panorama. Especially popular:

Top Activities in the Soča Valley:

  • Rafting on the Soča
  • Canyoning in gorges
  • Kayaking & SUP
  • Hikes along the "Soča Trail"
  • Photo spots at the Napoleon Bridge

For many campers, the Soča Valley is the absolute highlight of a Slovenian road trip.

Ljubljana – Europe's Underrated Capital

Slovenia's capital combines Mediterranean flair with relaxed city life. The car-free old town, numerous cafes, and green atmosphere make Ljubljana perfect for a stopover.

Highlights:

  • Old town along the Ljubljanica River
  • Dragon Bridge
  • Ljubljana Castle
  • Many cafes & street food

Coast & Piran – Mediterranean Slovenia

Although Slovenia has only a small coastline, it's absolutely worth seeing. Piran, in particular, stands out.

  • Venetian architecture
  • Narrow old town alleys
  • Sunsets by the sea
  • Fresh fish & Mediterranean cuisine

Javorca – Historic Memorial Church in the Valley

The Holy Spirit Memorial Church in Javorca is located above the Tolminka River and was built by soldiers during World War I. It is entirely made of wood and is now considered a UNESCO-affiliated cultural heritage site and a European monument.

The church commemorates those who fell on the Isonzo Front and is a place of peace and history amidst nature.

Kozjak Waterfall – Hidden Natural Wonder

The Kozjak Waterfall is one of Slovenia's most beautiful waterfalls. It plunges into an emerald green basin, surrounded by moss-covered rocks and dense forest.

Access is via a well-maintained hiking trail through nature along the Soča. At the end, a nearly mystical cave with the waterfall inside awaits you.

Triglav National Park – The Heart of the Slovenian Alps

Triglav National Park is the absolute natural highlight of any Slovenian holiday. It is the country's only national park and covers almost the entire area of the Julian Alps.

It owes its name to Slovenia's highest mountain, Triglav ("Three-Headed"), which majestically watches over lakes, valleys, and alpine landscapes. The park captivates with crystal-clear rivers, deep gorges, waterfalls, and impressive biodiversity.

Tolmin Gorges – Wild Nature in Lower Triglav

The Tolmin Gorge (Tolminska korita) is one of the most impressive natural sites in the south of Triglav National Park. The circular trail leads through narrow gorges, turquoise water, and dramatic rock formations.

Especially exciting: The gorges are located at the lowest entry point of the National Park and are easily accessible.

Pokljuka Plateau – Green Oasis of the Alps

The Pokljuka Plateau is a true natural paradise and known as a training ground for the world's best biathletes. In winter, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ski touring attract visitors, while in summer, hikers and cyclists enjoy the tranquil mountain landscape.

The region is ideal for families and active holidaymakers seeking nature and tranquility.

Juliana Ski Tour – Multi-Day Alpine Adventure

The Juliana Ski Tour is a challenging, four-day ski route through the Julian Alps. It connects various stages from Kranjska Gora in the north to Tolmin in the south.

The route is flexibly designed and can be adapted depending on snow conditions. This makes it suitable for experienced ski tourers as well as well-prepared beginners.

Krma Valley/Krnica Valley – Hike into the Heart of the Alps

The Krma and Krnica Valleys are ideal starting points for hikes in Triglav National Park. The route from Mojstrana through Zgornja Radovna into the valley is particularly popular.

More challenging tours towards the Triglav summit also start from here. A stop at the Kovinarska koča mountain hut offers a perfect break along the way.

Ideal for: Hikers & mountaineers (also suitable as an introductory tour)

Russian Chapel at Vršič Pass – Historic Memorial Site

The Russian Chapel was built in 1917 by Russian prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Vršič Pass road. The chapel, built entirely of wood, is a significant historical monument.

It commemorates the victims of World War I and is now a quiet but very moving place amidst the Julian Alps.

Zelenci Lake – Turquoise Green Natural Gem

Zelenci Lake is located on the northern edge of Triglav National Park and is one of Slovenia's most beautiful nature reserves. The vibrant turquoise-green water is created by numerous underground springs that emerge here, forming the source of the Sava Dolinka.

Surrounded by wooden walkways, the delicate marshland can be explored particularly well without disturbing nature. In the background, the Julian Alps rise impressively into the sky.

Peričnik Waterfall – Hike Behind the Waterfall

The Peričnik Waterfalls in Triglav National Park are among the country's most spectacular natural attractions. They consist of the 16-meter-high upper and the impressive 52-meter-high lower waterfall.

A special experience: The larger waterfall can even be walked behind – a rare natural experience in Europe. From there, a magnificent view into the Vrata Valley also opens up.

Which Campervan is Suitable for a Slovenian Holiday?

Which campervan is perfect for you depends on your individual needs. Before you find your perfect travel companion, you need to be able to answer the following questions:

  • How many people are traveling?
  • When does the road trip start?
  • Do you want to be able to travel self-sufficiently?

It makes a big difference whether you're planning a trip through Slovenia alone or with the whole family. Equally crucial is whether you start your road trip in mid-summer or in the depths of winter.

If you want to travel independently of sanitary facilities and campsites, you'll need a motorhome with full amenities. This includes a built-in bathroom with a toilet, a shower with hot water, and a kitchenette with a gas hob.

The auxiliary heater will also keep your feet warm on colder nights during your trip through Slovenia.

Where Can I Find the Best Campsites in Slovenia?

Triglav National Park has grown in popularity as a destination. If you plan to visit Slovenia during peak season in July and August, be prepared for crowds.

Even in early September, during the shoulder season, some campsites are almost fully booked.

For a relaxed and stress-free Slovenian holiday with your campervan, reserving campsites would be a very smart move.

These campsites are recommended:

Campsites in Triglav National Park

Campsites Bohinj

Campsites Bled

Campsites Ljubljana

What Do I Need to Consider for My Trip to Slovenia?

Entry to Slovenia – Documents & Important Information

For entry into Slovenia, you should carry your ID card or passport, as well as your driver's license and vehicle registration documents.

Additionally, you will need the Green Card (International Motor Insurance Card) as proof of existing insurance coverage for your motorhome or campervan. It confirms that your vehicle is insured abroad.

If you book your campervan with myvanture, you can easily request the Green Card from the team. While the European license plate generally suffices as proof, the insurance card is still recommended – better safe than sorry.

Vignette & Tolls in Slovenia

In Slovenia, a vignette is mandatory for using motorways and expressways. This may sometimes be required even on access roads, feeder roads, or in areas near roundabouts.

Without a valid vignette, severe penalties can apply.

Vignettes can be obtained:

  • At petrol stations in Austria and Italy (before the border)
  • Directly in Slovenia
  • Or online through official providers

All myvanture campervans and motorhomes are, of course, correctly registered, so you're ready to go.

Karawanken Tunnel – Note Additional Toll

If you enter Slovenia via the Karawanken Tunnel, an additional separate tunnel toll applies. Immediately after the tunnel, you will already be on the Slovenian motorway, where the vignette requirement then applies.

Official information on prices and regulations can be found at the Slovenian motorway company DARS.

Conclusion: Slovenian Holiday

If you're looking for a truly diverse country, Slovenia is exactly what you need. From wild mountains and tranquil lakes to lively cities, this small Alpine country offers numerous activities and sights. Whether you want an exciting time with friends or many beautiful moments with your family, are you ready to discover wild, beautiful Slovenia?
