Neuschwanstein Castle: Discover a Fairytale Castle in Bavaria

A road trip through Germany will lead you to many fascinating places, but none are as fairytale-like as Neuschwanstein Castle.

This impressive castle, just a 20-minute drive from our rental station in Reutte, is one of the most beautiful in all of Bavaria.

After parking our campervan (the main car park costs €10 for the day), we made our way to the castle.

One option we didn't take, but is definitely recommended, is a guided tour of the castle itself.

The tour promises fascinating insights into the history and lifestyle of King Ludwig II.

On our way up to the castle, we were already captivated by the majestic scenery. From a picturesque bridge, we had an unforgettable view of the castle and the surrounding landscape.

The breathtaking view made this stop a highlight of our day.

After admiring the castle extensively, we continued our exploration with a short walk to Hohenschwangau Castle. This equally beautiful castle in the region is definitely worth a visit.

The perfect end to our day was a visit to "Restaurant Müller," where we enjoyed a good Bavarian beer and delicious local dishes. It was a perfect opportunity to reflect on the day's impressions and savor Bavaria's culinary delights.

For the night, we had reserved a campsite about an hour away.

Our recommendation: If you want to camp near Neuschwanstein, it's advisable to book in advance, as campsites are often fully booked during the summer season. If you're looking for quieter and more affordable camping options, it's worth driving a little further.

We opted for a parking spot in the middle of the forest, which served as a starting point for hikes.

Wagenbrüchsee

Our journey through Germany continued to a hidden gem amidst the Bavarian nature – Wagenbrüchsee. This picturesque lake, just a short drive from our campsite, left us in awe and invited us to a relaxing day in nature.

When we reached the lake, we immediately noticed that it's not only a popular spot for walkers but also for cyclists, indicating great opportunities for bike tours here.

Wagenbrüchsee and the surrounding forests also offered a relaxed setting for a picnic or a leisurely day by the lakeside.

If you plan to visit Wagenbrüchsee, you can park in a paid car park nearby. The good news is that you can also stay overnight here to fully enjoy the beauty of the lake.

Eibsee

After our visit to Wagenbrüchsee, we continued our journey and finally reached Eibsee. Parking there is a bit expensive, but we assure you, the visit is worth it.

However, please note that camping is not allowed here.

Our exploration of Eibsee began at the "Seerestaurant Eibsee Pavillon," located directly on the lake shore. Here we enjoyed homemade cake and coffee while admiring the view of the lake and the surrounding nature.

Afterward, we decided to take a hike around the lake. The approximately 2-hour circuit not only gave us the opportunity to admire the beauty of the lake from different angles but also led us through dense forests and along shorelines.

For those who want to enjoy the cool waters of Eibsee, there are also swimming access points. Additionally, you can explore the surroundings from the water by renting a kayak.

Sylvenstein Reservoir Motorhome Pitch

This paid pitch proves to be the perfect overnight stop during a road trip through Germany.

The pitch is located in the middle of the forest, which provides pleasant shade in the summer season and ensures a comfortable temperature. It's a place where the surrounding nature creates a calming backdrop, and the stress of everyday life is quickly forgotten.

The facilities here are simple but clean and functional. There are toilets, waste disposal facilities, and fresh water points (remember to bring your own hose). These basic amenities make the stay pleasant and convenient.

The area around the Sylvenstein Reservoir offers numerous hiking opportunities.

Exploring Stolberg

After a long drive, we reached a secluded wild camping spot surrounded by fields, offering a picturesque view of a small lake. The peaceful atmosphere and spectacular sunsets made this place a true paradise.

From our idyllic pitch, it was only about 15 minutes to the charming small town of Stolberg.

A leisurely stroll through the narrow streets will take you through the town's history, and you'll have the opportunity to visit traditional shops.

For an authentic experience, we recommend a stop at Café Alt, where you can enjoy delicious coffee and homemade treats. Here, you can linger in a relaxed atmosphere and soak in the charm of this unique town.

Road Trip Through Germany: Hike to Brocken

After a relaxed stroll through charming Stolberg, we continued our road trip through Germany and reached our next campsite, the "Harz Mountain Camp."

The "Harz Mountain Camp" proved to be the perfect starting point for our upcoming adventure.

From here, we had the option to take the old steam train to Brocken or hike along the historic railway tracks that lead to this imposing peak.

The hike to Brocken was very easy and manageable even for less experienced hikers.

The views during the ascent are breathtaking, offering a fascinating panorama of the surrounding Harz Mountains.

An absolute must during your trip through Germany.

Wernigerode: A Charming Town in the Harz Mountains

Wernigerode, a magical town in the heart of the Harz National Park, was another highlight of our trip.

Our day began with a leisurely breakfast at "Das Luma'z" restaurant, which turned out to be a true discovery. Here, we were treated to excellent coffee and delicious rolls.

Afterward, we strolled through the narrow streets and admired the pretty half-timbered houses that Wernigerode has to offer. Every corner of this town seemed to tell a story.

Unfortunately, it started raining during our visit, which prevented us from visiting the castle. Nevertheless, Wernigerode Castle, perched high on a hill, is an absolute must-see for any visitor. On a clear day, it offers breathtaking views of the town and the surrounding mountains.

Saxon

Dresden: A Cultural Journey to the Baroque City on the Elbe

On our way from the Harz National Park to the enchanting Saxon Switzerland, we made a stop in the beautiful city of Dresden.

The city on the Elbe has so much to offer that we couldn't miss an extensive exploration.

Our walk began in the picturesque Old Town, from where we crossed the famous Augustbrücke.

From here, we had a breathtaking view of the historic Old Town, the Semperoper, and the Neumarkt.

We also discovered a pretty little courtyard designed by regional artists. Here we found not only nice small shops but also a cozy café with excellent coffee.

For parking, we recommend the "Parkplatz Sarrasanistraße," which offers a convenient starting point for exploring the city.

Bastei

Our journey continued to the Bastei, a must-see in Saxon Switzerland. This rock fortress is best known for the impressive Bastei Bridge, built into the steep rocks.

Although not much remains of the fortress, information and descriptions provide insight into the historical significance of this place.

From the Bastei, we enjoyed spectacular views of the Elbe and the unique, impressive landscape.

Admission to the Bastei is free, and visits are possible at any time of day, making it a great spot for sunrises and sunsets.

Unfortunately, parking fees for motorhomes are high, and overnight stays are not permitted.

If you want to stay longer in the region, we recommend the "Reisemobilpark Bastei."

Hike to Schrammsteinaussicht

Another highlight of our road trip through Germany was the hike to "Schrammsteinaussicht" in the Schrammstein Mountains.

Hiking in this region is a true delight, as it offers numerous quiet paths and breathtaking views.

From the nearby campsite and guesthouse Ostrauer Mühle, you can embark on a varied 4-hour hike that takes you around the impressive rock formations.

However, we started our hike from the hiking car park at the Falkensteiner Hütten-Café.

From a Road Trip Through Germany to Prague

On our way back, we made a stop in the enchanting city of Prague, which was on our route anyway.

We opted for an overnight stay in a hotel, but during our research, we came across the highly-rated "Camp Dana Troja" campsite, which makes the city accessible in just 15 minutes by tram.

On the first day, we strolled through the city, admiring the magnificent buildings and main sights, including the famous Dancing House, the Astronomical Clock, and the picturesque Charles Bridge.

Our exploration also led us to "Strelecky Island," where we could observe cute coypus. Here, we settled into one of the trendy bars or simply enjoyed the breathtaking view of the city.

To experience Prague's culinary scene, we tried the local delicacy "trdelník" at "Good Food Coffee & Bakery." Our culinary journey ended with a beer tasting at "U Kunštátu."

The second day began with a city tour, which offered a great way to get to know the city and its history.

There are various tours to choose from, and we opted for one that focused on World War II, which was extremely interesting.

Towards sunset, we returned to our viewpoint "Riegrovy Sady View" and enjoyed delicious pizza from "Sasy the Original."

The viewpoint was ideal for admiring the sunset.
