Tired of winter? Escaping to the south in your campervan is the perfect solution! Leave the cold behind and soak up mild temperatures. We'll tell you which countries offer sun, sand, and sea during winter, and share helpful tips for your trip.

Fog, rain, snow, and ice – the colder months in Austria and Germany can be pretty miserable. It's no wonder more and more people are escaping winter to enjoy sun, sand, palm trees, and new countries.

Are you one of those people who don't love winter and would much rather be barefoot on the beach, enjoying mild temperatures outside your campervan?

Then discover the most beautiful regions for wintering in the south. The sun is waiting for you – are you ready?

Wintering in the South: What does it mean?

Wintering in the south means leaving your home during winter and heading to a sunnier, warmer country.

Whether it's Greece, Southern Italy, or Spain – the desire for warmth and sun is strong. A motorhome or campervan is ideal for this.

The better equipped your van, the more freedom and flexibility you'll have for your travels.

What are the advantages of wintering in the south?

Besides the summer-like temperatures, traveling in the off-season offers many other benefits:

  • Campsites are cheaper and less crowded.
  • You'll encounter fewer tourists.
  • You'll experience the country more authentically.
  • You'll travel more affordably.
  • The weather is more pleasant.
  • Spontaneity is no problem.
  • You support local communities.

Tip: We've put together helpful tips and information about traveling in the off-season in a separate blog post. Check it out!

Which campervan is suitable?

The best campervan for wintering in the south depends on your travel style and personal needs.

The more equipped your campervan, the more independent and free you can be on your trips. If your campervan, like the Grand California, the Knaus Tourer Van, or the Knaus Van Wave, has a built-in shower or toilet, you won't need to search for sanitary facilities.

However, if an outdoor shower for quick rinses and public toilets are enough for you, you can also travel with a less fully equipped campervan like the VW California Ocean.

Wintering in the South Tips

Wintering in the South: The most beautiful destinations

Where's the best place to spend winter? Popular regions to escape the cold season include Spain, Italy, and Portugal. Southern Spanish regions, like Andalusia, are particularly tempting because temperatures rarely drop below 10° Celsius even in the colder months.

In Southern Italy and Portugal, you can still enjoy mild weather and sunny days in winter. In Portugal, winter is often the best time for long coastal hikes.

The same applies to the Canary Islands. It's no secret why this archipelago off the west coast of Morocco is becoming increasingly popular as a camping destination for holidaymakers seeking a longer winter stay.

Outside Europe, Florida, Thailand, South Africa, and Turkey are popular winter destinations.

Each country offers its pros and cons for wintering, which you should consider when planning your holiday.

Wintering in Andalusia

Andalusia is a wonderful place to spend the winter. Here, you can experience all four seasons at once. On the long sandy beaches of the coast, the thermometer can reach up to 20 degrees, while the inland Andalusian villages and national parks feel more like spring.

The best part about visiting this region in the off-season is that you won't have to contend with large tourist crowds. You'll have the cycling and hiking trails of the forested Sierra Norte all to yourself and plenty of time to explore historical sites like Málaga and Marbella.

If you don't want to completely miss out on winter snow fun, the Sierra Nevada, around the Veleta peak, invites you to visit from November to early May with around 100 kilometers of slopes and fresh mountain air.

Afterward, you can warm your cold limbs with a spa break in the Arab baths of Córdoba, Seville, or Granada. The warm feelings of the pre-Christmas season are guaranteed thanks to the living nativity scenes in Almayate and the Holy Week processions in Cuenca.

Traveling to Sicily in Winter

The island in the Mediterranean is especially beautiful in winter. There's snow on Mount Etna's summit, but in the lower elevations, temperatures can climb up to 22 degrees Celsius. The orange harvest takes place towards the end of the year, and almond trees begin to blossom in January.

In the mornings, you can strap on your skis in the higher altitudes, and in the afternoons, stock up on citrus fruits by the roadside before enjoying the sun on deserted beaches.

Or would you rather switch directly from a snowboard to a surfboard?

January is the ideal month for surfing off the coast of Sicily. You can also explore cities like Taormina or Palermo and visit millennia-old ruins in the Valley of the Temples. What more could you wish for?

Calabria in Winter

Calabria is one of Europe's sunniest regions, but it also offers many contrasts.

On the coast, you can relax with a cocktail and soak up the sun. However, for extended hikes through the mountainous regions of the hinterland, you shouldn't forget warm, winter-proof clothing.

Both Hercules and Odysseus found peace after their many adventures by setting up camp on the cliffs of Tropea. If you're also looking for a place to relax and escape everyday life, this spot could be perfect for you too!

Too quiet for you here? Then visit the city of Reggio Calabria and explore its many art, culture, and shopping opportunities.

Valencian Community

Spain's east coast isn't just a popular summer holiday destination; it's also beautiful in winter. With many year-round campsites and average temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit (15-21°C), it's no wonder campers love spending time here.

Not to mention the white sandy beaches of the Costa Blanca, where it's hard to find a free spot in high season.

Alicante is a beautiful city that not only boasts 330 sunny days a year but also has a charming old town and a delightful beach promenade.

In Valencia, a city known for its Art Nouveau buildings, life happens outdoors. Enjoy local paella under the bright blue sky.

If you're near Alcoy on January 5th, you absolutely shouldn't miss the Parade of the Three Wise Men, which has been held there since 1885.

Wintering in the South: Faro

Even on Portugal's Algarve, winter temperatures rarely drop below 10 degrees Celsius. Take long walks along sheltered coves and steep cliffs. Enjoy the sight of blooming lavender fields and breathe in the scent of wild herbs.

If you enjoy golf, you can also visit one of around 40 golf courses. Enjoy views of the blue Atlantic or the pine forests of the Monchique mountains while perfecting your handicap.

Fancy an adventure? Then drive to Cabo de São Vicente – Europe's southwesternmost point. Here you can explore the fishing villages on Portugal's south coast and try traditional seafood dishes!

The famous old cities of Faro and Lagos are always worth a visit. The infrastructure here is exceptional and leaves tourists wanting for nothing, even in the winter months. Thanks to the "365 Algarve" initiative, which ensures a full cultural calendar all year round, there's always something to experience here.

Visit Catalonia in Winter

The Pyrenees in northeastern Spain offer the best of both worlds for winter travelers. With eleven different winter sports resorts, all just an hour's drive from the coast, there's something for everyone.

Besides thrilling downhill runs and cross-country trails, you can also explore the mountains by snowmobile or go snowshoeing.

The Costa Brava, also known as the "wild coast," is a beautiful place with rugged cliffs and breathtaking coves. The only areas that take a break in the colder months are the party hotspots, like Lloret de Mar.

In the winter months, you'll have virtually free choice from a range of the country's best-equipped campsites.

Tired of sea views? Then explore the wine regions, castle ruins, and medieval villages inland, or marvel at the works of Gaudí, Picasso, Miró, and Dalí in Barcelona.

Wintering in the South on the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago near Morocco. The weather is usually warm, even in the winter months. It's no wonder the Canaries have been one of the top destinations for wintering in the south for decades.

Those who make the long journey are rewarded with wonderfully exotic landscapes, a relaxed way of life, and excellent infrastructure.

Enjoy Winter Months in Cyprus

Cyprus enjoys moderate temperatures and plenty of sunshine all year round, making it the perfect destination for a winter getaway.

Cyprus is a beautiful island that has something for everyone – whether you want to explore the island's history, relax on the beach, or enjoy nature.

Malta in Winter

Who needs a beach in Thailand when you have the Blue Lagoon in Malta? The Blue Lagoon is truly as breathtakingly beautiful as it looks in photos. It's formed by the islands of Comino and Cominotto and lies between the main island of Malta and the neighboring island of Gozo.

The water is crystal clear and has a beautiful blue hue. While you're there, you should definitely take a stroll across Comino and explore the unspoiled island.

How long can I stay abroad?

For non-EU countries, the legislation is simpler. The maximum length of stay is determined by the tourist visa and is usually between 90 and 180 days, depending on where you travel.

For long-term stays within the European Union, the following must be considered:

All EU citizens may travel to any other EU country for up to three months, provided they have a valid identity card or passport.

During the first three months after entering an EU country, EU citizens may not need to apply for a residence permit to confirm their right to live there. However, depending on the country, they may be required to report their presence upon arrival.

After three months, as an EU citizen, you must register your residence with the competent authority (usually the town hall or local police station). After completing this process, you will receive a registration certificate.

You will need an identity card or passport and proof of comprehensive health insurance, as well as proof that you can support yourself and are not dependent on social assistance.

After 183 days (6 months + 1 day), things get complicated because you are spending more than half the year abroad. There are certain things to consider here. Inform yourself very carefully with the relevant authority.
