This small Balkan country is still a real insider tip for travelers. We also wanted to explore the beauty of this country, and after exploring the picturesque coasts and rich culture of Greece, we continued our adventure into Albania.

Albania Road Trip: The Best Route & Helpful Tips

The Barrels Te Fuçitë & Gjirokaster
Upon entering Albania, we were immediately captivated by the breathtaking landscape. The drive from the border to Gjirokaster took us through beautiful and unique mountains that left us in awe.
Along the way, we made a quick stop at "The Blue Eye," but due to the onset of rain, we couldn't stay too long. Nevertheless, it was a magical place for a walk through the national park.
Once in Gjirokaster, our first order of business was to shop and get SIM cards at the Vodafone store. They offered excellent tourist packages tailored to our individual needs.
Afterward, we headed to a nearby winery called The Barrels-Te Fuçitë for dinner. The traditional Albanian cuisine delighted our taste buds, and the owner generously allowed us to camp in the winery's parking lot.
Although it wasn't luxurious, and we spent the night on a gravel parking lot without special amenities, it was ideal for spending a night and exploring the beautiful city of Gjirokaster the next day.
The next morning, we drove into the city early and had breakfast at a charming café called "Te Kubé."
This café was located beneath an old mosque and impressed us with its unique interior design. There, we enjoyed delicious coffee, various breakfast options, and tempting cakes.
After fueling up, we set off to explore the impressive Gjirokaster Castle. The historic site fascinated us with its authentic architecture and rich history.
In the museums, we gained exciting insights into the past and learned more about Albania's fascinating history.
From the castle, we had a breathtaking panoramic view of the picturesque old town that took our breath away.
These first experiences during our Albania road trip were already unforgettable, and we looked forward to more adventures awaiting us in this fascinating country.
Albania Road Trip: Exploring Llixhat e Bënjës
After our visit to Gjirokastër, we made our way to the "Llixhat e Bënjës" thermal baths, about 1.5 hours away.
Upon arrival, we immediately felt the magic of this place, surrounded by natural pools and an old stone bridge from the Ottoman Empire era.
The crystal-clear water was invitingly warm and perfect for a relaxing break.
However, we also had to be careful, as the stones became very slippery when it rained. It was also advisable not to enter the gorge, as a flash flood could surprise us.
If you want to explore the canyon, it is therefore strongly recommended to either stay alert or book a guided tour.
After a day of relaxation, we spent the night at the nearby Vjosa Explorer campsite.
The owner welcomed us very warmly and was always ready to help us with any questions or concerns. The facilities might be simple, but the hot showers proved to be a true luxury.
It was truly a great little spot to fully enjoy the soothing thermal baths. For us, this part of our Albania road trip was simply unforgettable, and we were thrilled by the beautiful natural treasures the country has to offer.
The Albanian Riviera
During our drive along the Albanian Riviera, we passed through Sarandë, an atypical resort town with many restaurants, cafés, and a picturesque beach promenade.
We decided not to stop and continued our journey on the coastal road, which took us over impressive mountain passes with breathtaking views of the Albanian coast.
Our first overnight stop was the idyllic campsite "Kamping Himara." Nestled among olive trees, it offered a magical view of Himarë Bay.
The site itself was well-equipped with good facilities, and we were surprised by a curious donkey.
Dennis, the warm-hearted owner, treated us to a fantastic dinner, which you should definitely order from him before arrival, as he only prepares it on request.
Although access can currently be a bit challenging due to a steep gravel road, we were assured that the road will soon be repaired, and the approach will be easier.
However, the effort to get there is well worth it.
From the campsite, a 20-minute walk leads to the enchanting bay called Aquarium Beach. The bay, with its turquoise water, is perfect for a relaxing beach day.
A little further on, we found another less frequented beach, which was also beautiful.
On our way along the Albanian Riviera, we received an additional tip for a stop: Gipje Beach, a popular beach in the impressive Gipje Gorge.
Unfortunately, we missed this spot, but it was recommended to us several times.
From the parking lot, a 20-minute walk leads to the beach with a magnificent view, which is worth the effort. The parking fee is 300 Lek for the day. If you want to avoid these costs, you can park further up and walk the approximately 1.6 km down to the beach.
We treated ourselves to a delicious lunch at Palasa Beach at the "Summer Dream Restaurant." We highly recommend the seafood pasta, but there were also other great dishes and refreshing salads.
Our coastal drive ended in Vlorë, where we camped outside the city on the coast. After driving on a gravel road, we discovered numerous excellent camping opportunities.
Other campers were there too, but it wasn't overly crowded.
If you're looking for a secluded beach and have a 4x4 vehicle, it's worth driving a bit further on the unpaved road to enjoy the peace and quiet.
Campsite 2: 40°30'31.6"N 19°23'52.4"E
Albanian Alps – Valbonë
After our time on the Albanian Riviera, we headed into the majestic Albanian Alps. The Valbonë Valley became our destination, where we set up camp at a beautiful and quiet wild camping spot (coordinates: 42°27'26.3"N 19°53'53.4"E).
In this secluded environment, we were completely alone, surrounded by breathtaking nature and imposing mountains. Some fire pits left by previous campers offered us the perfect opportunity to enjoy a cozy campfire.
The next day, we took a short hike on the most famous trail in the Albanian Alps, leading from Valbonë to the town of Theth.
Both places offer accommodation, but for camping, we definitely recommend Valbonë, as there are many beautiful and free campsites there.
For our second night, we chose a campsite belonging to Hotel Rilindja. This offered the option of a parking space with electricity or one further down by the river, which was a particularly nice choice.
The associated restaurant spoiled us with a variety of delicious dishes, and the facilities were excellent and clean. Overall, it was a great place for our stay in the Valbonë Valley.
How many days should you plan for an Albania road trip?
For a comprehensive overview of Albania and its diverse regions, you should plan at least 2 weeks for your trip.
The country offers an impressive variety of landscapes, from picturesque coasts to majestic mountains, breathtaking national parks, and charming cities.
However, it's important to note that road conditions are not optimal everywhere, and Albania is crisscrossed by many mountains. For this reason, we recommend always planning a little extra time for the drive from one place to the next.
Ideally, three weeks is even better. This allows you to delve deeper into the fascinating Albanian culture and make your trip a bit more relaxed.
With more time, you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty and authenticity of this country and discover the true gems of Albania off the beaten path.
So, the more time you take for your Albania road trip, the more intense your experience will be, and your memories will be all the more unforgettable.

When is the best time to travel to Albania?
For a relaxed and unforgettable Albania road trip, we recommend choosing the off-season and discovering this impressive destination outside of peak travel times. The months of September to October and May to June are ideal.
During these periods, you can enjoy the country in its full glory without being affected by the crowded tourist flows in July and August, especially on the coast.
However, you shouldn't wait too long, as many parts of the country are over 1000 meters above sea level, and it can get quite cold and snowy in winter.
To fully enjoy the pleasant temperatures and wonderful atmosphere of the country, the mentioned off-season months are ideal.
