Florence

The first stop is Florence. If you need a break beforehand and want to stretch your legs, you can stop in Bologna, explore the city, and treat yourself to your first pasta. Bologna is directly on the way, making it an ideal stopover.

Florence is an absolute must-see. A historic and architecturally stunning city. As the capital of Tuscany, it was one of the richest and most flourishing metropolises in the world. Considered the cradle of the Renaissance, it shaped culture and art throughout Europe.

Santa Maria del Fiore

One of Florence's most impressive sights is the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. The cathedral is the city's landmark and captivates visitors with its size and beauty.

Admission to the cathedral is free. Magnificent paintings await you there. The interior artwork will make any art lover's heart beat faster.

Uffizi Gallery

Continue through the charming streets of Florence. The Uffizi (the offices) is another famous and historic landmark of the city. Originally, it housed government offices.

The ruling Medici family transformed the magnificent building into a private art collection. Today, it is considered one of the most famous and historic art museums in the world.

Ponte Vecchio

One of the most famous and beautiful bridges in the world is the Ponte Vecchio. What's unique about the bridge is its construction with overhanging shops. In the past, butchers primarily traded in these small shops.

At the end of the 16th century, a ducal family moved into the nearby Palazzo Pitti. They were bothered by the smell of meat, so only jewelers were allowed to sell their goods on the bridge. Even today, you'll mainly find jewelers in the small shops, selling their jewelry over the river.

Piazzale Michelangelo

After a 20-minute walk from the Uffizi, you reach Piazzale Michelangelo. From here, you have a fantastic view over Florence. It's not a secret tip, but it's an excellent spot to enjoy the sunset with a good vino (important: buy a good bottle of wine beforehand). The city is bathed in a golden light, giving the place a very special romantic touch.

Siena

Our Tuscany road trip continued to Siena. Siena is located in the heart of Tuscany and is a popular attraction. The old town exudes a medieval flair with its many historic and architecturally interesting buildings. Since 1995, Siena has been a UNESCO World Heritage site and is part of our route for many reasons.

Piazza del Campo

The best way to start your city tour is directly at the famous shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. The square is the center of public life in Siena and thus also the most important square in the city.

Here you'll also find the fascinating Cathedral, made of characteristic black and white marble, dominating Siena's skyline. Directly opposite the Cathedral is the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala.

A former pilgrim's hospice, now used as a museum, attracting a multitude of visitors.

Palazzo Pubblico & Torre del Mangia

Another defining landmark of the city is the Palazzo Pubblico & Torre del Mangia. The former town hall, with its 102-meter-high bell tower, offers the most beautiful view of the city.

If you want to climb it, you should be in good shape. To enjoy the panoramic view, you have to conquer more than 400 steps, but the view is absolutely worth it!

Tuscany Road Trip: Pitigliano

The picturesque town of Pitigliano is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful highlights on a Tuscany road trip. It's a unique sight, as the town is perched on a 300-meter-high tuff rock, surrounded by deep canyons carved by the two rivers Lente and Meleta.

Old Town

A truly impressive cityscape with brown-red stone houses, lined up closely together and built right up to the edge of the cliff face.

The old town is partly surrounded by a medieval wall. Historic city gates like the Porta della Cittadella grant access to the city center, and at the lower end of the town is the second gate, Porta di Sovana.

Fontana delle Sette Cannelle

One of Pitigliano's most important sights is the Fontana delle Sette Cannelle (Fountain of the Seven Spouts) and its surrounding Piazza della Repubblica.

You can also admire the Cathedral of Santi Pietro e Paolo, which was also built in the Middle Ages. Art lovers can discover two works by Pietro Aldi here.

Vie Cave

However, Pitigliano is not just a stop on our road trip because of its fairytale scenery. Around the town are the so-called Vie Cave, a true peculiarity of the entire region.

The Vie Cave are ancient sunken roads from the Etruscan era, carved into the rocks more than 3,000 years ago. Some of these Vie Cave are up to 20 meters deep. The exact purpose of these paths is still unclear today.

Perhaps they were connecting and supply routes, or even mystical cult sites. You can explore the Vie Cave more closely on countless recommended hiking trails.

Other sights in Pitigliano:

  • Palazzo Orsini
  • Jewish Quarter
  • Piazza S. Gregorio VII
  • Lago di Bolsena
  • Park of the Monsters
  • Sacro Bosco

Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

Probably the most famous sight on a Tuscany road trip is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. It's Italy's landmark. You can imagine that the crowds here are accordingly large.

But hey, if you're already on a road trip through Tuscany, you should still take a look at the tower's lean. The tower is located in Piazza dei Miracoli, the Square of Miracles.

Here you'll also find other sights of Pisa, such as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. Together with the Leaning Tower, they form a fantastic picture and have been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987.

Marina di Pisa

Pisa also offers many beautiful beaches. Treat yourself to a break at Marina di Pisa. The beach offers an exceptional ambiance. Snow-white pebble beach, deep blue crystal-clear sea with pastel-colored beach houses. A wonderful place to enjoy the sun.

Other sights in Pisa:

  • The Baptistery
  • The Monumental Cemetery
  • Cathedral Museum
  • Piazza dei Cavalieri
  • Botanical Garden
  • Arno Riverbank & Church of Santa Maria della Spina
  • Migliarino San Rossore Natural Park

Tuscany Road Trip: Cascate del Mulino

The hot thermal spring Cascate del Mulino in Tuscany is an absolute highlight and should definitely not be missed on a Tuscany road trip. The 37-degree warm spring, which is of volcanic origin, is said to have healing effects on joints and skin.

According to Roman mythology, Jupiter hurled a lightning bolt at Saturn, but missed and struck the earth at the spot where the springs now emerge. The sulfur springs are perfect for relaxing, free, and accessible 24 hours a day.

Tip: visit the spring towards evening and watch the sky change color as the sun slowly sets. Truly a beautiful moment that will stay in your memory forever.

Distance back to Klagenfurt:

  • 2h 40min 210 km

Conclusion: Tuscany Road Trip

Anytime again! Tuscany is a diverse, beautiful travel destination. An all-round package with many cultural offerings, picturesque landscapes, plenty of nature, and hours by the sea. A road trip I can wholeheartedly recommend. Small tip: fines in Italy are very high, so pay close attention to speed limits and traffic signs to avoid any unpleasant surprises later. I'm already counting the days until I can drive my campervan over the gentle hills of Tuscany again.
