What is a Lake Tour?

Do you feel most at home near the water? Then a lake tour is perfect for you! A lake tour is a campervan road trip with a primary focus on lakes. A road trip to lakes is equally suitable for families with children, as well as for friends, active sports enthusiasts, and those seeking peace and relaxation.

Best Time for a Lake Tour?

Most lakes offer a wide range of activities. For example, at Millstättersee, there's a swimming pool with a water slide, a climbing garden right on the water, and a bathhouse with sauna facilities. You can do a lake tour not only in the summer months. It can be just as beautiful and relaxing outside of peak season!

Which Camper is Right for You?

It makes a big difference whether you're traveling with your whole family or just going on a fishing trip with your best friend. To find the perfect travel companion for you, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • How many people are traveling?
  • Do you need a lot of storage space?
  • Do you want to be able to camp off-grid?
  • What time of year are you traveling?

We've written other blog posts that will help you choose your campervan or motorhome.

Lake Tour: Our Itinerary

  • Pragser Wildsee
  • Tristacher See
  • Weissensee
  • Lake Bled
  • Hallstätter See
  • Attersee
  • Chiemsee

Plansee

Our journey begins at the beautiful Plansee, near the municipalities of Breitenwang and Heiterwang in the Reutte district. Plansee is a popular destination for runners, Nordic walkers, hikers, cyclists, and other sports enthusiasts. There's also a swimming beach, and for younger visitors, a mini-golf course. The lake is nestled between the Lechtal Alps, the Wetterstein Mountains, and the Mieming Range, making it a wonderful starting point for hikes into the surrounding mountains.

The underwater world at Plansee is just as fascinating and extensive as the attractions on land. The excellent water quality allows divers to explore the underwater world up to 15 meters deep. But there's plenty happening above the surface too: surfers and sailors consider it a hidden gem. Fishing is also a popular activity at Plansee. Whitefish, Arctic char, brown trout, rainbow trout, minnows, and perch are just some of the lake's inhabitants.

Fernsteinsee

Fernsteinsee in Tyrol is a popular destination for water activities, hiking, and relaxation. Only the bravest dare to venture into its icy waters, as temperatures range from a chilly 4 to 7 degrees Celsius. However, the more than 18 hectares of water surface attract anglers and recreational boaters. Cycling and hiking trails can also be found around the lake. With a depth of 17 meters, Fernsteinsee is ideal for an extensive exploration tour for divers. Dog owners will also be pleased to know that their four-legged companions are allowed to swim in Fernsteinsee.

If you're looking to simply enjoy a beautiful day at Fernsteinsee, you should check out Hotel Schloss Fernsteinsee. It gained significant importance after King Ludwig II of Bavaria chose it as his favorite excursion destination. The castle is located on the western shore of the lake. A special highlight is also the ruin of Sigmundsburg hunting lodge, which is located on an island in Fernsteinsee.

Obernberger See

Obernberger See lies nestled between many tall, steeply rising mountains, which gives it incredible beauty. The water below the Tribulaun mountain shimmers dark blue or in turquoise hues depending on the light.

For hikers and mountaineers, there are both easy and more challenging tours. There are wonderful trekking spots around the lake for every fitness level. As soon as there's enough snow, ski tours and snowshoe hikes are also possible.

The small chapel of Maria am See is particularly beautiful. It is the only chapel in Tyrol built so prominently on a lake. A bridge connects the lake chapel to this unique spot, allowing it to be reached by water.

Pragser Wildsee

Pragser Wildsee is located in the heart of the Prags Dolomites in South Tyrol. Its color changes throughout the year, from green to blue. In winter, the famous Wildsee is hidden beneath a layer of ice and snow. The "Pearl of the Dolomite Lakes" is a starting point for numerous activities such as ski tours, snowshoe hikes, walks, and Nordic walking, both in summer and winter. Special highlights in summer include nostalgic rowing boats and the lake circuit walk. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you can relax while fishing.

If you want to extend your camping trip further into South Tyrol, this blog might also interest you.

Tristacher See

Tristacher See is located south of Lienz, at the foot of the Lienz Dolomites. On hot summer days, the lake can reach up to 24 degrees Celsius. Around the lake, you'll find lidos, cafés, children's playgrounds, a romantic hiking trail, and a noteworthy biotope. You can also find campsites and hotels with wellness facilities – including saunas, massages, and indoor pools! Tristacher See is a very popular destination for fishermen and anglers. Before you cast your line, inform yourself about the rules and regulations in the respective area.

Weissensee

What makes Weissensee special is not just its crystal-clear water, but also its largely undeveloped shoreline. Here you can enjoy a diverse holiday amidst nature and mountain air! Whether it's mountain biking and hiking to the alpine pastures in summer or ice skating and cross-country skiing in winter: Weissensee is a beautiful destination!

Weissensee is not far from other lakes in Carinthia. If you have more time on your lake tour, you should definitely visit other lakes like Wörthersee, Ossiacher See, and Millstättersee.

Around the lakes, there are various activities and sights to visit. The Gerlitzen Alpe, for example, is located near Ossiacher See. In winter, you can ski, and in summer, you can paraglide from the mountain into the valley. A climbing garden and Landskron Castle with its eagle arena and monkey park are in the immediate vicinity of the lake.

Lake Bled

Three things you absolutely must not miss during your visit to Bled: be sure to visit Bled Castle, hike through the Vintgar Gorge, and try the delicious Bled cream cake.

The picturesque glacial lake is one of the most beautiful destinations in Slovenia. On our road trip through Slovenia, we also visited Lake Bohinj. A camping trip to Slovenia is not only beautiful but can also be combined with many activities and sights. Boredom? No chance!

Hallstätter See

Hallstätter See is located in the Salzkammergut region and is one of Austria's most impressive lakes. Nestled in the valley and surrounded by high, steep slopes, the lake lies with the village of Hallstatt, home to just under 1000 inhabitants, situated on a narrow strip of shore. This natural beauty invites you to hike and explore! The nearby Salzwelten (salt mines) and the Dachstein Ice Caves are highly recommended.

Attersee

Attersee is a breathtakingly beautiful lake that attracts holidaymakers from near and far. Its brilliantly blue water is simply a poem in itself. Austria's largest inland lake boasts drinking water quality, several beautiful swimming spots, and due to consistent wind conditions, it's also a destination for sailors and surfers.

It's not just sailors who get their money's worth at Attersee. From wellness and culinary programs to action-packed activities like mountain sports, climbing, and golf courses, you'll find it all around Attersee.

Chiemsee

The "Bavarian Sea" not only offers a beautiful view of the Alps but also numerous sports and cultural activities.

Chiemsee, Bavaria's largest lake, impresses not only with its beautiful views of the foothills of the Alps. It offers diverse recreational opportunities, significant sights like Herreninsel and Fraueninsel, and a varied sports program.

Whether by rowing boat, sailboat, surfboard, diving mask, or on a walk around the lake – there are numerous ways to discover the lake for yourself.

Conclusion: Lake Tour

A lake tour offers you the chance to experience adventure, relax in natural beauty, and enjoy culinary delights – all at once. Whether it's a family outing or a camping trip with friends, this lake-to-lake road trip can be tailored to your interests. You don't even need summer weather! Winter camping is just as suitable for a lake tour. Who needs crowds in peak season when you can have the place to yourself in autumn or winter?
